Mark Smith, co-owner and funeral director of Charleston’s McAlister-Smith, is slated to become the next president of the Cremation Association of North America. Founded in 1913, CANA is an international organization of more than 1,500 members, composed of cemeterians, cremationists, funeral directors, industry suppliers and consultants. CANA is concerned with the proper treatment and respect for those who have chosen cremation and that cremation is preparation for memorialization.

The South Carolina chapter of the Public Relations Society of America announced the installation of its 2006 leadership team. The executive committee is Angel Postell of Home Team Communications, president; Jason Snyder of Carolina PR/Marketing Inc., president-elect; Donna Keller of Palmetto Health, vice president; Keela Middleton of SCANA Corp., secretary; Brian Crenshaw of US LEC Corp., treasurer; and Tom Duke of Jackson-Dawson Marketing, immediate past president. Lowcountry board members are Allison Skipper of the South Carolina State Ports Authority, board member; Margaret Mullins of Roper St. Francis Healthcare, ethics officer; and Vince Benigni of the College of Charleston; and Melissa Flynn of Rawle Murdy Associates, board members-at-large. Lowcountry committee chairs are Jamie Thomas of the Charleston County Public Library, community relations; Tracy Pou of Select Health of South Carolina, diversity; Claire Gibbons of Rawle Murdy Associates, finance and development; Annie Byrd of Byrdhouse PR, luncheon logistics; Elizabeth Swink of Patrick Properties LLC, luncheon programs; Dean Foster of ASA Public Relations, senior practitioners; and Adie Lee of Arcadia Publishing, young professionals.

Eugene W. Blanton, president of Landmark Enterprises, was selected to the membership of The Counselors of Real Estate. The counselors is an organization represented by the most trusted advisors in real estate.

Jeremy N. Willits, a principal and office market specialist with barkleyfraser.com, has been elected to serve as a state director for the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors for the 2006-2008 term.

The Center for Women announced the 2006 officers and board of directors. The officers are Laura Bright, club marketing manager, The Kiawah Island Club, president; Virginia Hinnant, CEO, Biz Trek Marking and Bacchus Marketing, vice president of development; Shari Schleis, CEO, Splash marketing, vice president of membership; Darcy Shankland, editor, Charleston Magazine, secretary; and Frances J. Pearce, CPA, Pratt-Thomas&Gumb, CPAs, treasurer. The board of directors’ members include: Denise Barto, president, AAA Rentals and All Occasions; Andrea Ziff Cooper, founder and partner, Ziff Properties; Ronda Dean, president, Dalton-Demorest LLC and Dalton-Demorest Foundation; Jane Douglas, attorney and partner, Bluestein and Douglas; Charlene Harris; Dr. Ann G. Kulze, Just Wellness LLC; Dorothy P. Moore, distinguished professor of entrepreneurship, The Citadel; Alison Piepmeier, director, women’s and gender studies program, College of Charleston; Susan Romaine, Studio Romaine; Jamin Marlow Slone, art direction and design consultant; Alison Standard, president, A. New officers were installed at the annual Hebrew Orphan Society meeting: president, Herb Rosner; vice president, Charles Goldberg; secretary/treasurer, Dr. William Golod; and immediate past-president, Burnet Medelsohn.

Robert A. Bernstein of Bernstein & Bernstein PA was elected chairman of the Commercial Law League of America’s Creditors’ Rights Section. The CRS is an international association of more than 1,300 attorney members engaged in the practice of creditors’ rights law. The goals of the CRS are to promote high standards of professionalism, integrity and excellence in the practice of creditors’ rights law, to facilitate the exchange of ideas and to address pending legislation in both state and federal legislatures.

Cherie Blackburn, a partner with Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP in Charleston, was ap-pointed to serve as a member of the board of directors for the South Carolina Women Lawyers Association. The SCWLA’s purpose is to enhance the status, influence and effectiveness of women lawyers in South Carolina and to take positive steps to ensure that women lawyers achieve their fair share of opportunities and benefits available to those in the legal profession through advocacy, action and association.

Pat McDermott, treasurer/controller of The Beach Co., has been selected president elect of the board of directors of the South Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants for 2006. SCACPA is a voluntary membership organization composed of more than 3,500 CPAs employed in public accounting, industry, government and education throughout South Carolina. McDermott previously served on the board of directors for five years.
