Bobby R. Creech Jr., a CPA and partner at WebsterRogers LLP, has been appointed by Gov. Mark Sanford to a term on the S.C. Board of Accountancy through June 30, 2009.

South Carolina Research Authority announced the appointment of Marvin Davis as vice president of property and asset management for the asset sector business segment.

Sally Burnett, volunteer coordinator for Trident United Way’s 211 Hotline, has been named Volunteer Administrator of the Year by the Lowcountry Affiliate of the S.C. Association of Volunteer Administrators. Burnett organizes Trident United Way’s Day of Caring and works year-round to connect volunteers with volunteer opportunities in the tri-county community.

National Law Journal ranked Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein as one of the fastest growing law firms in the nation. Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein’s Charleston office grew by 50% in the previous year, contributing to the firm’s overall growth and position as the fastest-growing Carolinas-based law firm to make the list.

The S.C. Association of Certified Public Accountants elected Charleston’s J. Patrick McDermott as the organization’s president for 2007. McDermott is the controller and treasurer of The Beach Co.

East Cooper Meals on Wheels has announced recent board of directors and administrative position appointments. Added to the board of directors were: Kirk Darby, Huguenot Energy; Chip Fell, Smith Barney; Midge Moran, Cario Middle School and former executive director; and Patricia Walker, Meals on Wheels’ director of operations. Other new appointments include: Anne Medio, development director; Marne Rummler, program manager; and Lisa LeaMond Brantley, administrative coordinator.

Poogan’s Porch has been rated the best brunch in Charleston by the users of Citysearch.com, one of the nation’s leading travel and dining Web sites. Several thousand Citysearch users voted for Poogan’s.

The Gibbes Museum of Art’s collection of pastels was named one of the best in the United States in the October 2006 edition of Pastel Journal. The Gibbes shares this distinction with such institutions as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and the Butler Institute for American Art in Youngstown, Ohio. The Gibbes’ recognition focused on its collection of eight works by Henrietta Dering Johnston, who was the first professional female artist in America.

Alan D. Lail, a project manager and mechanical engineer for CRG Engineering, received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional designation from the U.S. Green Building Council, the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to sustainable building design and construction.

John K. Blincow, who practices with Turner Padget’s Charleston office, was selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America 2007. Blincow specializes in medical malpractice law.

The S.C. Chamber of Commerce honored distinguished South Carolinians at its 27th annual Celebrate South Carolina meeting. Paula Harper Bethea and William L. Bethea Jr. were named 2006 Business Leaders of the Year. Paula Harper Bethea is director of external relations for the McNair Law Firm and served the S.C. Chamber of Commerce as a board member and past chairman. She is chair emerita of United Way of America’s board of governors and is a former chair of United Way of South Carolina. William Bethea founded the law firm Bethea Jordan and Griffin in 1974. He has served on the boards of the University of South Carolina and Newberry College and is currently president of the University of South Carolina Alumni Association.

Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital recently celebrated its 10th anniversary in West Ashley. St. Francis has served the health and medical needs of people in the Lowcountry for more than 120 years, tracing its roots to 1882 when five Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy opened the St. Francis Infirmary on the corner of Calhoun and Ashley streets.

Edward Manigault Gilbreth has been named vice chairman of the board of Charleston-based Evening Post Publishing Co.

The board of directors of the John Ancrum SPCA elected Carol Berlin and Elizabeth C. Bowron. Berlin has worked at the Jewish Community Center for 25 years as a fundraising and special event director. Bowron is the controller for Atlantic Inc. Pest Management.

Nucor Steel-Berkeley presented its “Man of Steel” Award to U.S. Rep. Henry E. Brown, R-S.C. The honor recognized Brown for his work in Congress to strengthen American manufacturing and his support for fair trade.

High Cotton celebrated its seventh anniversary in November. The Post and Courier selected High Cotton as its 2006 restaurant of the year for its fresh, quality ingredients, impeccable service and exemplary skills in the kitchen among other factors.

Byers Design Group won a gold award from the Brick Industry Association for its design of the property at 19 Bedon’s Alley in downtown Charleston. The Byers-designed home was built by Sintra Homes.

Several Lowcountry venues were honored with Four-Star and Five-Star rankings from the annual “Mobil Travel Guide.” Woodlands Resort and Inn in Summerville won a Five-Star ranking for lodging. Woodland’s Dining Room won a Five-Star ranking for restaurants. Charleston Place in downtown Charleston and The Sanctuary on Kiawah Island won Four-Star rankings for lodgings. Charleston Grill and Peninsula Grill in downtown and the Ocean Room at The Sanctuary won Four-Star rankings for restaurants.

Charleston Southern University’s Web site was ranked in the top 5% of all college Web sites in the nation by Enrollment Power Index, a program funded by the National Research Center for College and University Admissions.

The board of directors of the American Society of Civil Engineers elected Clarence C. “Bubber” Hutto III, of Charleston’s Horner Eelman & Gearhart LLC, to fellow.

The Citadel Alumni Association recently honored six outstanding alumni. Channing Proctor, founder of the Charleston Miracle League and a 1991 graduate of The Citadel, was named the association’s first Young Alumnus of the Year. Thomas R. Culler, class of 1950, was named Alumnus of the Year for his exceptional dedication and loyalty to The Citadel. Les Robinson was presented with an Honorary Life Member Award. In his five years as director of athletics, Robinson has overseen the opening of the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium and an addition to McAlister Field House, which houses women’s athletics. John Baker, class of 1950, was presented with the Distinguished Life Member Award for his exceptional dedication and loyalty to his alma mater as both a cadet and an alumnus. Dan Dehaenen, class of 1993, was named Club President of the Year for his work with the Charlotte Area Citadel Club. Charlie Burnside, class of 1965, was named District Director of the Year. Burnside has been the district director of North Carolina for the 12 years.

Lawrence E. McKay Jr. of Mount Pleasant was named The Citadel School of Business Administration’s alumnus of the year. McKay, class of 1958, was recognized for his many contributions to education and business.

Dawn Robinson, vice president and commercial relationship manager with First Citizens Bank in Moncks Corner, recently completed the American Bankers Association’s National Commercial Lending School at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Dorchester County Habitat for Humanity has added Lyn Mettler, Jennifer Quattlebaum and Sandra Call Wilder to its public relations committee. They bring diverse backgrounds in public relations and communications experience to the committee.

Ed Pendarvis, founder and chairman emeritus of Sunbelt Business Brokers, was named a fellow of the International Business Brokers Association. IBBA fellowships are awarded to members who demonstrate professional excellence through their brokerage experience and education and pass a comprehensive examination.

Charleston designer/illustrator Wade Harris was commissioned by Motor Trend magazine to illustrate an article for its December 2006 issue. The illustration features a holiday theme with Santa’s sleigh stuffed with new cars.
