New Kiwanis Club sponsors bowl-a-thons

The Kiwanis Club of Knightsville, which was charted in May, held a pair of bowl-a-thon fundraising events at Dorchester Bowling Lanes on Dorchester Road in Summerville. The first event was attended by more than 230 children from area daycare centers; the second event was open to families. Chicks with Checks helps Dee Norton center

Chicks with Checks held a charity event to benefit the Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center in August. The center is dedicated to reducing the impact and incidence of child abuse on children and their families in the tri-county community. Sea Island Habitat opens satellite store on Edisto

Sea Island Habitat for Humanity has taken a step onto Edisto Island by opening a Resale Store at 487 Highway 174. All money raised at the store, which opened in August and will be staffed exclusively by volunteers, will go to buy land and build Habitat houses in the Edisto area. The store will initially be open 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday. Sea Island Habitat’s other Resale Store is located at 3304 Maybank Highway on Johns Island.

Patriots Point to host Quilts of Valor

For one week at the end of September, the hanger bay of the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point will be home to the Quilts of Valor, a project created to provide homemade quilts to wounded veterans of the U.S. armed forces. The aircraft carrier will host the display from Sept. 25 through Oct. 1, at which time the quilts will be sent to U.S. troops who have been injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.
