EAST COOPER HABITAT RAISES HOUSES IN KATRINAS WAKE
Thirteen volunteers working with East Cooper Habitat for Humanity traveled to Mobile, Ala., to participate in Operation Home Delivery and build homes in an area devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Over the course of four days in early May, East Cooper Habitat and 10 other volunteer groups from around the country put up 11 houses. The new owners of the houses are expected to begin moving in during midsummer, and all 11 new homes will be occupied by Thanksgiving. VOLUNTEERS INSTALL 100+ FENCES ON ISLE OF PALMS
Nearly 100 volunteers gathered at Isle of Palms on May 6 to install over 100 fences along a half-mile stretch of the beach. The Doin the Dunes event is an annual volunteer gathering on the first Saturday of May to do maintenance work on the beach. This years event also included breakfast and lunch, and Time Out Sport and Ski and Fort Sumter Yacht Club provided kayaks, boats and water safety equipment for the volunteers in the afternoon. MAYOR RILEY CELEBRATES ALLEY RENOVATION
Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. was on hand on May 23 to dedicate a plaque honoring the completed renovation of Philadelphia Alley, a quaint downtown street between Church and State streets. The city has been working with residents to improve the alley. The renovation began in 2002 and has included new lighting and work on the hardscape to reflect the historic look of the alley.
