Dunhill Staffing Systems Inc. named Katie Whitman, vice president of Dunhill Staffing Systems of Charleston, the company’s No. 1 producing recruiting consultant for 2004. Whitman joined the company in 2002 and achieved Rookie of the Year honors in 2003. In addition, Dunhill Staffing Systems of Charleston was the company’s No. 1 revenue producing office for 2004.

 

International Comfort Products named Ott Distributors as winner of the 2003 Heil Distributor of the Year award at the national distributor meeting in California. Ott Distributors earned the award based on its work to increase brand recognition through marketing and customer service.

 

The Charleston Trident Home Builders Association awarded Alison Dailey of Alison Dailey Properties the 2004 Builder of the Year Award for her community involvement in various legislative groups, including serving as co-chair of the South Carolina Home Builders Association legislative committee. Jan Clouse of Carolina Lanterns received the 2004 Associate of the Year Award for her dedication to the coordination of the Home & Outdoor Living Show.

 

Dr. William M. Simpson Jr., a family medicine physician with the Medical University of South Carolina, was named Family Physician of the Year by the South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians. He was recognized for his contributions and service to his community, his patients and the specialty of family ­medicine.

 

Trident Technical College’s Division of Continuing Education and Economic Development received several awards from the South Carolina Association for Continuing Higher Education. The Outstanding Continuing Education Program award was given to the Online Coding Specialist Program and Regina Lane, program leader. Program leaders David Lusk and Yvonne Noisette received the Outstanding Cooperative Continuing Education Program award for their Military Inmate Training. The award for Outstanding Continuing Education Credit Instructor went to Ronald Vann for his work in the welding industry. Michele Shinn, director for the Career, Personal and Professional Department, was awarded the John J. Duffy Scholarship. Shinn is pursuing a doctorate degree in higher administration.

 

Medical University of South Carolina head and neck oncology surgeon Dr. Terry Day was among 65 physician-educators from around the country to be nominated by Association of American Medical Colleges student representatives for their practice of humanistic medicine. The only South Carolina physician nominated, Day competed with others for the 2004 AAMC Humanism in Medicine Award sponsored by the AAMC and Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative.

 

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation awarded $150,000 to the South Carolina Aquarium for a new sea turtle rehabilitation project. A formal sea turtle “hospital” will be created within the aquarium. The Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center will serve as South Carolina’s primary sea turtle rehabilitation center.

 

Tim Carmichael, assistant professor of history at the College of Charleston, received a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture and research at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, throughout 2005. He will teach courses on Ethiopian, African and Islamic history and work on several research projects, including a volume of translations of Emperor Haile Sellassie’s personal letters.

 

Verizon Wireless has been recognized as the No. 25 employer in the state, as ranked by the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce. The company employs more than 3,500 South Carolinians, with its Carolinas/Tennessee Region headquarters in Greenville and call centers in Greenville, Columbia and North Charleston.

 

Brandon Guest, president of Horne Guest Insurance, was designated a certified employee benefit specialist by the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Guest passed a series of college-level national exams on employee benefit subjects. He is one of 10,300 graduates.

 

Lowcountry Senior Center received the NuStep Pinnacle Award for excellence in wellness programming for seniors. The center earned the award in the category of wellness/fitness centers.
