B.P. Barber & Associates donates food, supplies to My Sister’s House

The Charleston regional office of B.P. Barber & Associates Inc. recently donated food and supplies collected by the employees to My Sister’s House Inc., a source of free services to domestic violence victims and their children The donations will help provide a comfortable home for the women and children in the shelter, and the games and art materials will provide hours of fun for the kids.

Teams from Public Works travel to Mississipi to help Katrina victims

Four two-person teams of engineers, technicians and operators from Charleston Commissioners of Public Works recently traveled to the Mississippi Gulf Coast on behalf of Water Missions International to assess damage to water supplies in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The teams, based out of relief centers, traveled into the rural areas for seven days to perform water quality testing and to gather data on the status of the water and sanitation systems.

Manufacturer donates 1,500 pairs of trousers in wake of hurricane

Berle Manufacturing, a Charleston-based producer of high-end men’s trousers, donated more than 1,500 pairs of trousers with a retail value of more than $136,000 to help outfit those impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Berle supplied the trousers to The Rogue, a retail outlet in Jackson, Miss., which funneled the relief distribution effort through Helping America Needing Disaster Support, an organization working with the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Emergency Management Authority to collect and distribute essential needs to those most affected by the storm.

Local insurance agency donates to Katrina relief efforts

The employees of C. T. Lowndes & Co., a local independent insurance agency, raised $895 for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. This amount was matched by the agency, for a total of $1,790 to be sent to the American Red Cross.

Rotary Club golf tournament helps local boy, educational programs

The Rotary Club of North Charleston sponsored a golf tournament from which, of the amount raised, $10,000 will be directed to assist an 11-year-old North Charleston boy who is scheduled for surgery at MUSC in the near future. The remaining funds will be directed to educational programs in the North Charleston area.

Kitchen design donated to Ronald McDonald House

To assist the Ronald McDonald House’s staff in reforming the kitchen to conform to the needs of multiple families, Duval Acker of Kitchens By Design worked with interior designer Kelly Lucas to completely change the layout, appliances and materials making up the kitchen space.

MIL employees donate to AHA Heart Walk

Employees of The MIL Corporation, a federal contracting company at the U.S. Department of State Global Financial Services division in Charleston, recently donated $2,772 to the American Heart Association for its annual AHA Heart Walk. To inspire the Charleston MIL corporation team, awards were presented for the highest contributors, Eugenia Bell and Pete Larson, T-shirts featuring the MIL logo were given away and an inter-departmental competition was formed with the winning team receiving lunch.

Elementary school donates to Helping Hands

Helping Hands of Goose Creek recently received a check for $838.28 from the students at Westview Elementary School in Goose Creek to help provide relief for Hurricane Katrina evacuees in the area.
