Joseph F. Rice, co-founding member of Motley Rice LLC, served as co-chair and speaker at the 2005 Mealeys National Asbestos Litigation Conference held in Philadelphia, Sept. 19-20. The panel discussion titled Legal and Financial Aspects of Proposed Federal Asbestos Legislation covered the concerns surrounding the latest federal asbestos legislation, including the various party views, fund start-up and operations, outstanding amendments and claimants rights.
Century 21 Real Estate Corp. recognized Candace Palmer, a sales associate, with the Pacesetter Platinum Award. To achieve the award, Palmer recorded a minimum of $95,000 in adjusted gross commissions as of the end of June 2005.
Teachers Celina P. Anthony of West Ashley High School, Ruth Agnes Cox of First Baptist Church School and Keri Peterson of Trident Academy have been named finalists in The Citadels annual Lowcountry Spanish Teacher of the Year program. The three teachers were selected from more than a dozen nominees from Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties. They were judged on 10 categories that include innovation in teaching, initiative in Spanish curriculum development and extra-curricular activities related to teaching and professional development. Judges were the student officers of the Tau Iota Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi and Spanish faculty at The Citadel.
Dr. Brent Egan, professor of medicine and pharmacology at the Medical University of South Carolina, received the Distinguished Researcher Award from the International Society on Hypertension in Blacks at the organizations recent conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was also elected to the organizations board of trustees.
The Charleston Area Transportation Authority was awarded a Discretionary Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for $1,705,431. The grant will be used for construction of Phase 1 of the North Charleston Regional Intermodal Transportation Center, which involves construction of a Park-and-Ride lot.
Twelve South Carolina writers were selected to receive $500 and have their short stories published in The Post and Courier for winning the 2006 South Carolina Fiction Project. The 12 winners were Emily Avent, Charleston; Jannette L. Finch, Charleston; Mark T. Miller, Aiken; J. Mark Powell, Charleston; Jonathan Sanchez, Charleston; Michelle R. For the third consecutive year, Summerville-based Carpet Care Services, owned by Al Bradham, was recognized as an industry leader in the disaster restoration field by the national trade publication, Cleanfax magazine. The August 2005 issue placed CCS as the No. 5 firm in the nation for Most revenue from a single water damage restoration account. CCS received the recognition for restoring the First Baptist Church of Pensacola, Fla., following Hurricane Ivan in Sept. 2004.
CZK Consultants LLC, a Charleston-based information technology and engineering services firm, was recently awarded a contract by the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center to continue Program Management and Technical Support Services for Code 741. CZK will also serve as a subcontracting team member to BAE Systems in support of SPAWARs $58 million technical services contract, which could reach $314 million if all options are exercised. This contract will provide security and Anti-Terrorism-Force Protection systems support at government facilities worldwide.
