David Felix, director of client services for Planning the Globe was nominated as a finalist for Event Producer of the Year by Event Solutions Magazine Spotlight Awards 2005. Felix is one of five finalists chosen from hundreds of national and international entries. The winner will be determined by votes cast online via the Event Solutions Magazine Web site.
Bob Harris, executive vice president for sales at JK Harris and Company in North Charleston, was named the Angel Flight Southeast 2004 South Carolina Pilot of the Year. Angel Flight Southeast is a non-profit volunteer pilot organization that arranges free air transportation by private aircraft to distant medical facilities when commercial service is not available, impractical or not affordable.
The S.C. Marine Educator Association honored Carmelina Livingston, the South Carolina Aquariums education program coordinator, with the Presidents Choice Award. This award is presented to the individual who has continuously demonstrated support and dedication to the association and a commitment to furthering marine education.
College of Charleston chemistry and biochemistry professor Dr. Gamil Guirgis was named Chemist of the Year by the S.C. Section of the American Chemical Society. Guirgis immigrated to the United States from Egypt in 1969 and began work with Bayer Corp. He retired in 2001 and became an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston. He was appointed a research scientist in 2002.
Andra L. Watkins, owner of Positus Consulting LLC, was the featured speaker at the May meeting of the S.C. Association of Personnel Services. Watkins outlined various ways business owners and managers could improve and predict cash flow.
The South Carolina Aquarium received a $500,000 grant from the Spaulding-Paolozzi Foundation for its overall conservation and education efforts. Alicia Spaulding-Paolozzi was a philanthropist, activist, businesswoman and pioneering sportswoman. She also was a longtime supporter of the aquarium and an original member of the board of directors. The aquarium will name the 2,500-square-foot special exhibit gallery in her honor.
The Citadels Army ROTC program was named No. 1 in the region. It received the Order of Founders and Patriots of America Award from the U.S. Armys Cadet Command, based in Fort Monroe near Newport, Va. The Palmetto Battalion was recognized for increases in enrollment, the number of commissioned officers and the quality and performance of cadets in national leadership competitions for the 2003-2004 academic year.
Wordsworth Writing & Editing and Julie Frye Design were recognized in an international awards competition for their outstanding creative work on a capital campaign brochure for Circular Congregational Church. Wordsworth Writing & Editing is owned and operated by Catherine Kitty Fahey. The brochure, Century Five: Growing in Gods Light, received an Award of Distinction from the Communicator Awards Print Media Competition.
Charleston was honored by readers and staff in Southern Living magazines Southern Living Favorites issue. The 205 Favorite Spots Awards were based on Southern Livings 140 editorial staff members favorite picks in a variety of categories. Kiawah Island was voted a Most Romantic Spot and Best Spot to Walk the Beach. The Charleston area was voted a Best Spot to Take a Walk, while Charleston Place Hotel, Middleton Place and Cypress Gardens were all named favorite places in South Carolina. Lowcountry cuisine came out on top in the Tastes of the South category. The readers of Southern Living also lauded the Charleston area in two other categories: Top Southern City and Best Shopping Destination. Magnolias Restaurant was listed in the Splurge Restaurant category.
Executive chef Craig Deihl and founding chef Donald Barickman represented Cypress Lowcountry Grille at the Hearts Delight Wine Tasting and Auction in Washington, D.C. The event raises money for the American Heart Association. Deihl was one of several chefs from the around the country selected to participate.
Gail Strunk, appraisal instructor at Fortune Academy of Real Estate in Charleston, received her Appraisal Qualified Board Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice certification. She is one of 11 appraisal instructors in the state who has this distinction.
